Adult Dosing
Otitis externa
- Instill 10 gtts into the affected ear(s) qd x 7 days
Chronic suppurative otitis media with perforated tympanic membranes
- Instill 10 gtts into the affected ear(s) bid x 14 days
Notes:- 10 gtts = 0.5 mL
- Warm the solution by holding the bottle in the hand for one to two minutes to avoid dizziness that may result from the instillation of a cold solution
- The patient should lie with the affected ear upward in order to instill the drops. Pump the tragus 4 times by pushing inward to allow penetration of the drops into the middle ear
- This position should be maintained for five minutes
Pediatric Dosing
Otitis externa
- 6 mo-13 yrs: Instill 5 gtts into the affected ear(s) qd x 7 days
- 13 years: 10 gtts into the affected ear(s) qd x 7 days
Acute otitis media with tympanostomy tubes
- 1-12 yrs: Instill 5 gtts into the affected ear(s) bid x 10 days

- 12 yrs: 10 gtts into the affected ear(s) bid x 14 days

- 5 gtts=0.25 mL

- Should not be used for injection or ophthalmic use
- Anaphylactic reactions such as cardiovascular collapse, loss of consciousness, angioedema (including laryngeal, pharyngeal or facial edema), airway obstruction, dyspnea, urticaria, itching have been reported in patients receiving systemic quinolones, and may occur following the first dose. Discontinue the drug if such reactions occur with ofloxacin otic solution
- Prolonged use may result in over-growth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi. Obtain culture to guide for further treatment, if the infection does not improve after one week
- If otorrhea persists after a full course of therapy or if two or more episodes of otorrhea occur within 6 months, further evaluation is necessary to rule out an underlying condition such as foreign body, cholesteatoma, or a tumor
Supplemental Patient Information
- Advise patients to avoid contaminating the applicator tip with material from the fingers or other sources
- Inform patients to discontinue treatment and contact their physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: Safety unknown. Maternal use of an ear drop that contains ofloxacin presents negligible risk for the breastfed infant.
