Tinea corporis

griseofulvin microcrystalline

• 500 mg PO Daily x 2-4 wks
• Alt: 250 mg PO bid
• Give with fatty meal to increase absorption

• 375 mg PO Daily x 2-4wks; may give in divided doses thereafter

Tinea capitis

• Treatment of the following ringworm infections:
• Tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp)
• Tinea corporis (ringworm of the body)
• Tinea pedis (athlete's foot)
• Tinea unguium (onychomycosis; ringworm of the nails)
• Tinea cruris (ringworm of the thigh)
• Tinea barbae (barber's itch)

• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the product
• Porphyria
• Pregnancy or intention to become pregnant within 1 month of stopping therapy
• Hepatic failure

Renal Dose Adjustment

• Renal impairment: No dose adjustments

Hepatic Dose Adjustment:

• Hepatic impairment: Contraindicated

• Therapy is not indicated for the prophylactic use
• Suspend therapy if severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis or erythema multiforme occur
• Therapy may cause elevations in AST, ALT, bilirubin, and jaundice which may be serious and may result in hospitalization or death
• Closely monitor patients on prolonged therapy with any potent medication
• Periodically perform renal, hepatic and hemopoietic tests during the therapy
• Patients should be warned to avoid exposure to intense natural or artificial sunlight as a photosensitivity reaction is occasionally associated with griseofulvin therapy which may aggravate lupus erythematosus
• Males should consider waiting for 6 months after therapy before fathering a child
