ridge
An elongated projecting structure or crest.
alveolar r.The bony ridge of the maxilla or mand ible that contains the alveoli or tooth sockets.
basal r.A ridge on the lingual surface of the incisor teeth, esp. the upper ones, situated near the gum. SYN: cingulum (2).
carotid r.The sharp ridge between the carotid canal and the jugular fossa.
deltoid r.The ridge on the humerus where the deltoid muscle is attached.
dental r.The ridge between two planes meeting on the surface of a tooth.
dermal r.One of the ridges on the surface of the fingers that make up the fingerprints. SYN: crista cutis.
epicondylar r.One of two ridges for muscular attachments on the humerus.
external oblique r.An anatomical land mark that is a continuation of the anterior border of the mand ibular ramus and extends obliquely to the region of the first molar. It serves as an attachment of the buccinator muscle and appears superior to the mylohyoid ridge on a dental radiograph.
gastrocnemial r.A ridge on the posterior femoral surface for attachment of the gastrocnemius muscle.
genital r.A ridge that develops on the ventromedial surface of the urogenital ridge and gives rise to the gonads.
gluteal r.A ridge extending obliquely downward from the greater trochanter of the femur for attachment of the gluteus maximus muscle.
interosseous r.A ridge on the fibula for attachment of the interosseous membrane.
interureteric r.A ridge between the openings of the ureters in the bladder.
mammary r.In mammalian embryos, a ridge extending from the axilla to the groin. The breasts arise from this ridge. In humans, only one breast normally develops on each side, although additional nipples occasionally develop along this ridge line. SYN: milk line.
marginal r.In dentistry, a ridge on the mesial or distal surface or the occlusal surface of a posterior tooth. These ridges resist occlusal loading.
mesonephric r.A ridge that develops on the lateral surface of the urogenital ridge and gives rise to the mesonephros.
mylohyoid r.The ridge forming the line of attachmenton the medial aspect of the body of the mand ible for the mylohyoid muscle, which forms the floor of the mouth.
pronator r.An oblique ridge on the anterior surface of the ulna for attachment of the pronator quadratus.
pterygoid r.A ridge at the angle of junction of the temporal and infratemporal surfaces of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone.
rete r.A downgrowth of epithelium surrounding connective tissue papillae in the irregular internal surface of the epidermis. Microscopic sections often appear as single downgrowths, but the epithelium lies in a series of interconnecting ridges at the dermis-epidermis interface. SYN: rete peg.

trapezoid r.An oblique ridge on the upper surface of the clavicle for attachment of the trapezoid ligament.
urogenital r.A ridge on the dorsal wall of the coelom that gives rise to the genital and mesonephric ridges. SYN: urogenital fold.
SEE: genital ridge; mesonephric ridge.
