Turmeric is a spice that contains a chemical called curcumin, which may reduce swelling. As a supplement, turmeric may have both pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties.

Contraindicated in:

Natural-Drug Products:

May increase bleeding risk with antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants. Turmeric is an antioxidant, there are concerns it may decrease the effects of some cancer medications (alkylating agents or Topoisomerase I inhibitors). May interfere with the glucose lowering effects of hypoglycemic agents and cause blood sugar to drop. May affect absorption of talinolol, ↓ the effects. May affect absorption of amlodipine, ↑ the effects. May affect absorption of tamoxifex, ↓ the effects. Turmeric should be used cautiously with other drugs metabolized by the liver (Cytochrome P450). Large amounts of turmeric may decrease effects of estrogen.

Natural-Natural Products:

May have affect absorption of iron. May increase risk of bleeding with herbs that have antiplatelet/anticoagulant properties such as clove, garlic, ginger, gingko, ginseng and others. Avoid using with other with herbs that affect blood glucose such as chromium, fenugreek, garlic, ginseng and others.

PO (Adults ): 1–2 g per day.

Lab Test Considerations:

Monitor blood glucose, coagulation panel, hormone panel, and lipid panel periodically during therapy.

PO: Orally as a capsule or tablets as a single daily dose or divided into three doses.
It is sometimes prepared as a topical cream or gel.

Advise patient to report worsening symptomatology promptly to health care professional.
Rep: Advise females of reproductive potential to notify health care professional if pregnancy is planned or suspected or if breast feeding.
