Adult Dosing
Short-term treatment for insomnia
- Start 10 mg PO before bedtime; 5 mg in elderly (>65 yrs) or debilitated patients
- May increase to 20 mg if needed
- MAX: 20 mg/day; 10 mg/day in elderly
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established

- Failure of remission within 7-10 days may indicate presence of a primary psychiatric and/or medical illness that should be evaluated
- Severe anaphylactic reactions viz angioedema involving the tongue, glottis or larynx have occurred. Do not rechallenge
- Discontinue drug if worsening of insomnia or the emergence of behavior abnormalities occurs
- Abnormal thinking, behavioral changes, complex behaviors including sleep driving and hallucinations may occur. Use of alcohol and CNS depressants increase the risk for such behavior. Discontinue drug if complex sleep behavior occur
- Zaleplon has a CNS depressant effect. Due to rapid onset of action, it should ingested immediately prior to going to bed or after the patient has gone to bed and has experienced difficulty falling asleep
- Patients should avoid engaging in hazardous activities requiring motor coordination or mental alertness like operating a motor vehicle or heavy machinery
- Additive CNS-depressant effects may occur when co-administered with other psychotropic medications, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, narcotic analgesics, anesthetics and ethanol
- Zaleplon may cause withdrawal effects if discontinued abruptly

- Hepatic impairment
- Hx of depression
- Hx of psychiatric disorder
- Alcohol use
- CNS depressant use
- Impaired respiratory function
- Elderly patients
- Hypersensitivity to ASA
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: Zaleplon is excreted in breastmilk in low levels. Amounts ingested by the infant are small and would not be expected to adversely affect the breastfed infants.
