The trauma patient is anyone who has suffered any type of serious or life-threatening injury resulting from an accident. This encompasses all age and socioeconomic groups. There are multiple mechanisms of injury, including motor vehicle accident (MVA) or motor vehicle crash (MVC), burns, falls, and gunshot wounds. Treatment for these patients begins at the scene of the injury and continues throughout hospitalization. Mortality is classified as (1) immediate (resulting from injury to the heart or great vessels or the neurologic system) at the scene of injury, (2) early occurring minutes to hours after the injury (resulting from hemorrhage and/or cardiovascular collapse or failed ventilation/respiration/oxygenation or massive central nervous system damage), or (3) late occurring days to weeks after the injury (multi-organ failure or sepsis) (Copes, Sacco, Champion, & Bain, 1990).
