Prothrombin complex concentrates (PCCs) are mainly given for reversal of vitamin K antagonists and in the management of critical bleeding associated with major surgery, trauma, or liver failure.

  1. PCCs are the drugs of choice for emergent reversal of oral anticoagulants in place of factor VIIa and FFP, the previous standard of care.
  2. The potential for PCCs to generate a significant thrombin burst puts patients at risk for thrombotic complications.
