Information

Numerous recommendations provide guidance for the transfusion management of thrombocytopenia and acquired or inherited platelet disorders (Table 16-6: Indications for Platelet Transfusion).

  1. In preparation for surgery on the eye or the central nervous system, the platelet count should be raised to >100,000/µL.
  2. Platelet transfusion should not be guided by platelet counts alone, but also by the clinical suspicion of platelet dysfunction, which can be inherited or acquired (Table 16-7: Causes of Acquired Platelet Dysfunction).
