Information

Specific diagnosis is usually unnecessary except when STEC/EHEC/STEAEC is involved. To detect the latter, simultaneous culture (screening for E. coli strains that do not ferment sorbitol followed by serotyping for O157) and testing for Shiga toxins or toxin genes is recommended.

Treatment: Intestinal Infections Caused by E. Coli

  • See Chap. 82. Infectious Diarrheas for more details. Replacement of water and electrolytes and avoidance of antibiotics in STEC/EHEC/STEAEC infection (since antibiotic use may increase the incidence of HUS) are indicated.
